Camp!

We had a great time at camp. Our class was split into two different travel groups, Red and Yellow. All of our girls were in Ewing 2. Most of our boys were in Searles 2. Four boys were in Searles 4. Our cabin leaders were Allie, Courtney, Grayson, Thomas, Alex, and Ethan. They were a lot of fun. They had to make up the work they missed while they were gone.

We liked Star Lab, Gimme Shelter, and Horse Ride best. Some of us liked the Underground Railroad evening activity, but some thought it was too realistic. Most of us liked campfire, especially "The Candy Store" and Thomas doing "Ice, Ice, Baby!" That was followed by a short night hike, where we looked at the night sky and played "Bat and Moth." We also ate "moon rocks", which are Wintogreen lifesavers. They spark when you chew them.

We liked the horse ride. (All but Jacob went on the ride. He got on a horse in horse sense.) We played "Red Light, Green Light" on horses, got them to reverse the rotation, reached for heads and tails, and rode one handed. It was so much fun!

Enrichment

Blissfield Elementary has two different programs for enrichment. One of them is choir. Third, fourth, and fifth graders can join choir. We do a Christmas concert and a spring concert. The spring concert this year will be at St. Peter's Church, because it is for the community. We were supposed to do that concert earlier, but flooding in town cancelled the concert.

Recorder Ensemble is just for fifth graders. All fourth and fifth graders play soprano recorders in music. Fifth graders get to play bass, alto, or sopranino recorders. The bass is really big. The alto is smaller than the bass but larger that the soprano. The sopranino is little with a high pitch. We play at the fifth grade concert and the spring concert. We will also play at the nursing home.

Mr. Barrus is the music teacher. He is the best!

Picture It!

We are doing a cooperative art project called "Picture It!" with other classes from other schools. A picture is divided into squares. Each classroom is assigned a square to color. The classrooms send the pictures to the other classrooms. You could either color it with crayons or you could draw it for yourself and color it. There are twenty-four squares to the picture. One school has classrooms doing the squares 20-24. We are doing square 17. It isn't easy to draw our square. We have discussed how we should color it. It may look funny when we get the squares if we don't match colors.

We are also sending a paper to them that tells about our class and school. It will be interesting to see how the finished picture looks with all of the colored pieces included. Right now it is on our board in black and white.

Perfect Attendance

The kids in the elementary school, who got perfect attendance from the first semester, got to have sundaes at McDonald’s Restaurant. There were 103 kids that had perfect attendance!  Since there were so many children we split in two different groups. The first group was kindergarten through second.  Then it was our turn, the third through fifth graders.
There were four different flavors of sundaes to choose from. They were: plain, chocolate, strawberry, and caramel.  I had caramel. It was delicious! It was fun. We could sit with anyone we wanted to sit with.  Our bus there and back was crowded, but I didn’t mind.

Holiday Card Exchange

Holiday Card Exchange

We participated in a holiday card exchange with jenuinetech.com (organizer of the O.R.E.O. Project).  We were matched with 30 other classrooms from across the United States and Canada.  The theme was snowman.  We made cards to send the other classes. We have received nine cards from other classes so far.  Most of them have a snowman on them.

To make our cards, we used paint chip strips.  (Mrs. Hojnacki saw it on Pinterest.) We used sequins for the buttons. The rest was made from paper scraps. To make the card, we ripped blue paper to look like a snow pile. Then we glued it on a white card. Then the snowman went on the card.  Finally, we wrote a holiday message inside.  The back of the card has information to share with the class. We finished the cards today so they can go in the mail tonight.

Geometric Tree

My name is Dathan.  I am going to tell you our math competition.  In math class last week all the fifth graders made a geometric tree.  It is a Christmas tree that uses different geometric shapes and terms to decorate it. Our math teacher, Mrs. Lewis gave us different colors of paper.  When we were finished we were going to vote for the neatest tree.  The trees were going to count as test grade, so we wanted to make sure we made and labeled them correctly. On Monday, we made last minute fixes on our trees. On Tuesday we voted for the winner of the trees. Kiley won the neatest tree. My tree wasn't the favorite, but I earned an A- on it. I think I did a good job on it. What do you think?

Native American Diorama

Our Native American dioramas were due a few days ago. We had to choose between several Indian tribes, including the Plains Indians, the North West Coast Indians, the Desert Southwest Indians, and the Eastern Woodland Indians. I chose the Plains Indians because they are the kind of Indians we Americans think of today. I know that’s the kind I think of. A lot of other people did the Plains Indians, but there were a lot of other people who did the other kind of Indians. All the projects I saw were very creative.  One, Daniel’s Southwest Pueblo, I liked even better than mine.  I thought that was interesting because usually if you make something, yours is your favorite. I liked working on my diorama, and it was fun to see all the other projects on display.
